Hokkaido University was founded in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College — the first institute of higher education in Japan. Following in the footsteps of its first Vice Principal Dr. William S. Clark, Hokkaido University upholds four specific philosophies, "Frontier spirit", "Global perspectives", "All-round education" and "Practical learning". We introduce each philosophy in detail.
